age of meat proxies

A pink character working at a laptop with the OpenAI logo.

software engineering has changed so much in the little time i’ve been involved with it. mainly because of the accelerating nature of ai(now super intelligence lol) - even the name got changed haha. this change is inevitable, but how do we cope?

a lot of the work I do these days is assisted by ai. in so many ways I love it, in so many more ways I hate it as well. I find myself in a place where most of the job i do is accelerating so fast with ai. if you find yourself at such a place where work moves ridiculously fast you might find yourself being a “meat proxy”. you have to churn, churn and churn so much lines of code with ai, the cognitive overload is crazy.

business expect results and ideas need quicker execution before they are well formed. the belief is that with ai, we can do so much more and yeah while that’s true, there is a lot of tradeoffs not being considered at the moment. we’re at an age where every one, from business execs -> engineers are meat proxies, I find it very funny actually. I like to reason about things, be intentional about my decisions and thoughtful about the work I do. I’m all these things in my free time outside my regular 9-5. I’m not against the use of ai, but I think we need to appreciate the work we do more. I wonder how the next few years look like
